FCIA MANUAL OF PRACTICE

One of the FCIA’s core missions is building knowledge and awareness of the importance of life-safety firestop systems and effective compartmentation.

Seeing the construction industry’s need for a definitive body of knowledge for firestopping and effective compartmentation, FCIA’s Technical & Education Committee (TE Committee) created the TE Task Group: FCIA Firestop Manual of Practice (MOP) to develop a series of industry resource guides to elevate not only the knowledge of firestop company management, the quality of workmanship of firestop containment workers and inspectors, but also to impart the requisite knowledge to specifiers and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ’s) who issue building permits and approvals. The result was the FCIA Firestop Manual of Practice (MOP).

All parties involved in the construction process need to understand industry protocols for firestopping and effective compartmentation reliability — the ‘DIIM’ of Firestopping^TM.

Further, those Specialty Firestop Installation Contractors pursuing FM 4991 Approval or UL-ULC QFC Qualification and Firestop Special Inspection Agencies seeking IAS AC 291 Accreditation must satisfy an individual knowledge requirement for these third-party accreditation programs. This is done through an individual from their organization passing either the FM or UL-ULC Firestop Exam, comprehensive industry-specific exams that assess the individual’s proficiency in firestop listings, the FCIA Firestop Manual of Practice (MOP), installation, systems selection and analysis, inspection, code requirements, and more.
